Minor Project

I walked by Knowlton School of Architecture everyday. It is a very interesting building at OSU. Pac-man inspired me of doing this picture. Life is like a Pac-Man game, one has to finish eating all the beans before those monsters get him/her.

Kimmelman

I think Kimmelman’s article is interesting. He did not want to write and introduction of art history. He wrote a book which is about how art connects about life. Art is everywhere, a building, painting, anything in our daily life could be an art work. Art comes from life, and life affects art.

I think the best part of his article is the question he asked at the end of the first part, “What do you look for when you go to a museum or a gallery?” My answer is, because of it’s beauty and my curiousity.

Next two articles

The Walker Article

After I finished reading of walker article, I learned more about the importance of “big idea” to an article. I have heard this term before. A great artist needs a great “big idea”. I think an artist with no big idea would be unpredictable and strange. An artist’s big idea should be simple and clear, so he or she could become famous in the world. I think a big idea is kind like a boundary or comfort zone, better not to break or challenge it. Some art works might be confusing or nearly impossible to understand by viewers, but if people could learn the big idea of the artist. It might be easier for viewers to understand the idea behind the work.

Artist has his or her own “big idea”, so does everyone in the society, people has “big idea” through his or her own life, growing up from being a child to an adult. In general, I enjoyed reading this article, because it is not only easy to read, but also presents lots of important concepts of artmaking.

The Barrett Article

In the Barrett article, I like the part that article analyze many different connotations and denotations and how different students see it. I really like the part that he pulls the “Rollingstone magazine ” as an example of connoted image and linguistic message. Vivid example like this could be really helpful for explaining ideas. He presents some new ways of seeing magazine cover, commercial or poster, which I have never noticed that there are so many strategy of making a magazine cover.

Students of different ages have different ways to see connotations and all any kinds of different things. He written this article in the order of different groups, but no compare them all in a same paragraph, because those different groups are not comparable.

First two articles

The Cheese Monkeys

I have to admit, this article is confusing. The title leads people’s imagination. I have no any thoughts when I finished reading it at the first time, but we I took a deep breath and read it all over again, I can figure out the interesting meaning of this article. This article is interesting, I don’t know whether is appropriate to say it is “black humor”. Author uses some weird and interesting way to define some ideas, “Left to Right” and “Tuesday and Thursday”. This article is a package of author’s imagination.

One thing that I really dislike this article is this article seems really unorganized. When I was reading this paragraph, I could not predict what is at the next paragraph. Many paragraphs look like unconnected. Maybe I am not good enough to understand the structure of this article, but this article shows us the different ways of thinking.

The Heresy of Zone Defense

I am a fan of basketball, so compare with “The Cheese Monkeys”, this article is easier for me to understand it. I love this article starts with a great moment of basketball history. Those histories push basketball’s growth. Rules make basketball a better sport. I think making rule is really important in everywhere, not just the sport game. After reading this article, I could not find the relation between art and this article, but basketball game itself is an art.

I have watched Erving’s classic shot on Youtube, it is amazing…
